A very interesting book. It's a loving portrait of a fascinating man. It's a very interesting portrait of the barbaric way of life in villages in Crete. And at the same time it's a portrait of a horrible, selfish spoiled brat. Throughout the book he is extremly annoying with his spiritual self-importance. But near the end he gets worse and worse. He's a reminder that spoiled intellectuals can be dangerous: In one single paragraph the horrible rich kid manages to find excuses for the fact that a widow he slept with is beheaded by the whole village, in front of his eyes! It's how it's meant to be in the bigger scheme of things.
All the ideas in this book are terribly outdated. But as a historical record it's very interesting.
