1 BESTSELLER • The groundbreaking book that redefines what it means to be smart, with a new introduction by the author

“A thoughtfully written, persuasive account explaining emotional intelligence and why it can be crucial.”— USA Today

Everyone knows that high IQ is no guarantee of success, happiness, or virtue, but until Emotional Intelligence, we could only guess why. Daniel Goleman's brilliant report from the frontiers of psychology and neuroscience offers startling new insight into our “two minds”—the rational and the emotional—and how they together shape our destiny.

Drawing on groundbreaking brain and behavioral research, Goleman shows the factors at work when people of high IQ flounder and those of modest IQ do surprisingly well. These factors, which include self-awareness, self-discipline, and empathy, add up to a different way of being smart—and they aren’t fixed at birth. Although shaped by childhood experiences, emotional intelligence can be nurtured and strengthened throughout …

Review of 'Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ' on 'Storygraph'

Informative, but dry and dated.

Dr. Goleman makes a convincing case for the importance of emotional intelligence, bringing stories and statistics to bear in making his argument for a more well-rounded view of education, and his book presents a very thorough survey of his theory. It does have an occasional undercurrent of panic about "kids these days", which usually comes off to me as uncritically buying into a generational gap without actually trying to understand the generation(s) in question. Dr. Goleman also laments the imminent "crime storm" of the 1990s, which, as even a cursory examination of statistics will demonstrate, completely failed to materialize. (Whether this is itself evidence of Goleman's advocacy, I can only speculate.) Nevertheless, for those who are interested in the subject of emotional intelligence and are comfortable with the density of Goleman's writing, this seems a solid introduction to the subject.

Review of 'Emotional Intelligence' on 'Goodreads'

I know this book was groundbreaking for many, but there's nothing here other than a re-hash or previous thinking, some bad research and poor assumptions, and an easy path to dinner conversation 'relevance'. It's also a great way to help other people understand why you think you're great even though you're not very bright.
