For one thousand years, the people of Alera have united against the aggressive and threatening races that inhabit the world, using their unique bond with the Furies--elementals of Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Metal. But now, the unity of the Alerians hangs in precarious balance. The First Lord of Alera has fallen in his efforts to protect his people from the vicious attacks of their enemies. Now, the fate of the Alerians lies in the hands of Tavi, a young man who must use all of his courage and resourcefulness to save his people--and himself.

*After much reflection, I think that the problematic treatment of fantasy-indigenous people in this series is inextricable from the story and, as much as I personally enjoyed these books as a teenager, I don’t recommend the series.

Academ's Fury is a good follow-up to Furies of Calderon, introducing new players (Varg, Tavi's classmates) & clarifying what's at stake. It's layered and intense, introducing new levels of secrets and intrigue, mixing the political and the personal.

This book has a lot to handle, moving between rural Calderon and the Academy in the capital. In some ways it's a second introduction, basically doubling the number of key characters by adding those around Tavi in the city. This means it has a lot of ground to cover, and it does it admirably, but while the later books will get to use this as a foundation it doesn't have that luxury and ends …

After being incredibly underwhelmed by the first entry in the Codex Alera series, I steeled my resolve to at least slog through the second one before tossing the whole series in the fire.

And was pleasantly surprised.

Butcher's second book in the series is a fantastic fantasy romp, shoring up all of the weaknesses from his first. Gone are the one dimensional characters and obvious plot twists. Gone are the Deus Ex Machnia saves, boring descriptions, boring characters, boring dialogue, and no consequence of actions for the parties (Spoiler, literally everyone of consequence in the first book that are 'killed' live because "reasons.")

There is real death and decision hinged on every action. Though the main players are all wearing their plot armor to some extent, the FEELING of danger exist. There are real plots and intrigue, and players in the game act with shades of grey as opposed to …

I tried to go back to back from book #1 to this book; I had difficulty. Book #1 ended in a lot of excitement and book #2 had to start a new story, which meant new setup and a slower pace. It's really my fault for enjoying the first book and trying to go straight into the second without pausing. You do get to see more development of the "main" story. So book #2 took a while longer for me to read than book #1, but after I gave myself a little pause in reading, I was hooked again.
