Large numbers of atheists, humanists, and conspiracy theorists are raising one of the most pressing questions in the history of religion: "Did Jesus exist at all?" Was he invented out of whole cloth for nefarious purposes by those seeking to control the masses? Or was Jesus such a shadowy figure -- far removed from any credible historical evidence -- that he bears no meaningful resemblance to the person described in the Bible? In Did Jesus Exist? historian and Bible expert Bart Ehrman confronts these questions, vigorously defends the historicity of Jesus, and provides a compelling portrait of the man from Nazareth. The Jesus you discover here may not be the Jesus you had hoped to meet -- But he did exist, whether we like it or not. -- Publisher

In this answer to those who claim Jesus never existed in any form, Ehrman worries that his skeptic fans will be put off by this book while his fundamentalist detractors will find more to their liking than usual.

I can't speak for the Christians, but I suspect if they don't like Ehrman's approach to Jesus in his previous books I doubt they'll find much solace in his defense of the historical Jesus.

I can't really speak to his normal, god non-fearing fans either, since I am only myself, but I will say that for me the appeal of Ehrman is his methodical approach to scholarship. Yes, I take pleasure in knowing that the bible is provably full of fictions, but from the first Ehrman book I've read I've been fascinated by the idea of painstakingly comparing documents to feret out the truth. I suspect I would find this as interesting …

The argument, by a self-described agnostic, for the historical existence of a man named Jesus in the first Century who was crucified by Pontius Pilate. The reasoning that he uses to get to that point won't please many fundamentalists, but from a scholarly perspective it seems convincing.

As readable as the author's other works, but somewhat less interesting for the simple reason that very few people doubt the existence of a historical Jesus to begin with, whatever their religious views. Enough do doubt that existence to justify the book, but his systematic dismantling of the "mythicist's" arguments tend to get a bit repetitive after a while. It's justified because he's attempting to deal with each issue they bring up, but it still gets a bit tedious at times.

Written by an atheist academic historian, I find this most interesting for it's historical arguments and analysis of the texts. I suppose from this perspective, Ehrman has books that may have been more useful than this particular one. Though it was vaguely interesting to hear the arguments and refutation of the so-called mythicists who argue that Jesus didn't exist from a historical perspective, I could have done without the quarter of the book which focused more on these aspects.

I was glad that Ehrman did come around in the final chapter to suggest a reason why the mythicists exist and what their potential agenda may be, though I wish I had read that chapter first and skipped the rest of the text to read more of his other academic work instead.

The title of the book obviously panders a bit toward a much larger and wider audience and the structure …

I'm a huge fan of Bart Ehrman. I've learned more from reading his pop-history books than the work of any other individual author, and I've found him to be a fascinating and engaging writer. I have looked forward to every single book he's released in the last 10 years, eagerly awaiting the day it's available and devouring it.

Because of my admiration for Ehrman and his work, it brings me a great deal of pain to admit that "Did Jesus Exist?" is Ehrman's worst book, at least of those I've read. And it's not his "worst book" in the way that "Eyes Wide Shut" is Kubrick's "worst movie" where even the worst output of a visionary is better than average. Did Jesus Exist? is a bad book. I hate it.

Let me first set the stage. I am nonreligious but a big fan of historical, evidence-based information about religion and …
