Lydia lives in Acapulco. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while cracks are beginning to show in Acapulco because of the cartels, Lydia’s life is, by and large, fairly comfortable. But after her husband’s tell-all profile of the newest drug lord is published, none of their lives will ever be the same.

Forced to flee, Lydia and Luca find themselves joining the countless people trying to reach the United States. Lydia soon sees that everyone is running from something. But what exactly are they running to?

I'll be frank: I didn't want to read this book. I've been spending the last year-plus reading a lot of books written by authors of color, queer authors and, generally, voices that are not often amplified, so I really wasn't interested in reading a white woman's take on the immigrant experience. But alas, the book club I help manage at work chose this as part of an observance of Hispanic Heritage Month (grumble) and after toying with the idea of just not participating, I decided I would read it and see what all the fuss was about.

Well, a few chapters in I forgot all about the racial controversy surrounding the book because I was too overwhelmed with how poorly this novel was written: the muddiness of the narrative, the clunky use of Spanish words, the melodramatic plot elements and the bland central character. I suppose I shouldn't …

I avoided this book for a while because of the controversy around it, but I’m glad I finally picked it up. It’s long and stressful to read — the sense of menace and peril follows the reader for all 400-ish pages, but that also made it hard to put down. It does suffer from the same problem as all novels that serve an agenda — in this case, the desire to introduce the reader to characters representing a variety of different types of migrant stories — in that some of the plot elements seem contrived simply to introduce those characters before the main characters leave them behind. However, it’s a powerful story of loss, regret, and bravery, with the potential to help generate empathy and support for migrants everywhere.

Every day a fresh horror, and when it's over, this feeling of surreal detachment. A disbelief, almost, in what they just endured.

A griping tale that shows the plight of citizens fleeing their homes for reasons most of us cannot fathom. However sensationalized this story may be (or not, Cummins indicated several years of research went in to this book), the truth is probably a lot darker than the majority of us realize.

This story was a rollercoaster and each chapter had enough climax or tension that I would say "one more" and made faster progress through the book than I expected.

...he starts to understand that this is the one thing all migrants have in common, this is the solidarity that exists among them, though they all come from different places and different circumstances...each of them carries some story of suffering on top of that train and into el …

I've read many of the criticisms of this book. Some seem likely to be true, and I can see why it might be offensive. On the other hand, it's just a novel. I know that novels about the Holocaust or the formation of Israel, e.g. Exodus, are often dramatized and inaccurate, and their movie versions may be even worse. So, first, intelligent readers should not form their opinions on complex matters based on a novel, but, second, if the story is in your favor (Remember Uncle Tom's Cabin?) maybe you should leave well enough alone.
