Poor Fitzie Fitz..
Definitely my favorite in this trilogy. While the pacing of the story was very non-linear and not always great in my opinion, the side characters really shined through. My favorite character is the Fool, whom had many of developments and really brought a side of Fitz into the light that was unseen before.
A bit disappointed that the pacing was as slow as it was (I thought that the sequel would be full-pace action). Regardless, the read was still enjoyable; though I will admit that the romance was what I least liked.
As a fantasy junkie it delights me that a good author can take a theme that has been done 1,000 times and with good writing and strong characters provide an entirely new, engrossing experience. The bastard son? Man communicating with wolves? Lost Birthright? Evil forces with a senseless destruction mandate that threatens to destroy an already crumbling empire? Sheesh, how generic! How many times have I encountered hero/arch nemesis wielding a supernatural power that threatens to destroy its talented user? So many times, and yet, this series has me committed. The second book is more thrilling than the first, especially the last 3 or 4 hundred pages. Robin Hobb is excellent at pacing and wreaking a dramatic, page-flying ending. I cannot wait to get my hands on book 3, it will be short-lived on my nightstand, I am sure.
