Review of 'Affair' on 'Goodreads'

The return to Jack’s past, just a few months before the Killing Floor and while he’s still in the military, is a big miss for me. The previous two novels actually had subtle interconnections and breaking that chain was an irritation. Worse: I don’t really recall the supporting characters that are Jack’s friends and don’t care how immature they were about ten years ago in 1997.
I do appreciate the subtle callouts to Jack’s future, and how this case really prepared him into the wandering avenger he is today.
Where this book really went wrong is the return to “Jack gets the Girl”. It’s bad. It’s cringe bad. The number of graphic sex scenes (and length) is masturbatory. I skipped them as they were utterly irrelevant and effectively pornographic.
There are plenty of other Jack Reacher novels. You don’t need to read this one.

The ending also felt ridiculous, since people must have suspected that the Senator and his son were murdered. The statement that Jack sent into the army was so ridiculous, and was apparently just accepted, despite a sitting US SENATOR ON THE ARMED SERVICES COMMITTEE getting killed.
I really didn’t enjoy that. And it was worse because then the higher-ups in the Army now have Jack on their shit list…. Despite them suspecting this guy of assassinating a Senator? Like, REALLY? All they’re going to do is kick him out, instead of inspecting the fuck out of the situation and throwing him in jail?
Oh, and this is after him and Nagley killed a Colonel in the Pentagon.
Fuck. After 61 Hours and Worth Dying For, we get a turd like this. What a shame
