"With the acclaimed Temeraire novels, New York Times bestselling author Naomi Novik has created a fantasy series like no other, combining the high-flying appeal of Anne McCaffrey's Pern saga and the swashbuckling derring-do of Patrick O'Brian's historical seafaring adventures. Now, with League of Dragons, Novik brings the imaginative tour de force that has captivated millions to an unforgettable finish. Napoleon's invasion of Russia has been roundly thwarted. Review of 'League of dragons' on 'Goodreads'

I must confess I felt a bit emotional to finish this book and say goodbye to Temeraire and Lawrence. The last few books of the series had a general sense of Novik just wanting to finish and get on with writing something else, with glitchy pacing, new plots and characters that didn't go anywhere, and loose ends left hanging. This final instalment was no different, with some very major character stories unresolved, but the last few pages and the historical plot resolution satisfying at least.

My favourite fantasy books involves human/non-human relationship and moral quandaries, and this series had that in spades. I loved the opportunity to imagine a history in which colonialism had ended up differently, and kind of wish we had dragons around now to sort us all out.
