"When the Rooks family moves to the remote town of Litchfield, NH to escape a haunting trauma, they're hopeful about starting over. But something evil is waiting for them in the woods just beyond town. Watching from the trees. Ancient...and hungry" --

The story is a decent enough horror story and could've been 3 stars if not for two things

The story ends abruptly and never gets continued. The name "volume 1" implies there's going to be a 2nd one, but it never happened!

The art is terrible. I don't mean the drawings themselves, I mean that for some reason they decided to put a filter over the entire comic that makes it look like I accidentally dropped my coffee on it. See this image? This is what this entire comic looks like. There are transparent splashes all over every single page, probably to hide how little detail there is in the actual art and give it a "dirty" feel but it ends up getting obnoxious VERY quickly.

I wasn't emotionally engaged by either the horror nor the personal aspects of this story - though I do see qualities in both of them. The horror had some great imagery, but it's too quick to jump to "monsters" for there to be any uncomfortable in it. Had it lingered a bit more on people, instead of scary woods and trunks, I think I would have found it to be more effective (but I saw some reviews arguing the opposite, so there's that).

It's also a story about being a father, and feeling helpless against the fears faced by your child(ren). This, along with the art, is definetly the best part of the book.

The story was OK, a little short imo. I didn't find it particularly scary or creepy and I felt like it was a bit wobbly towards the end. That said, I did like it. The artwork was pretty wonderful - all grungy and horror-esque. I loved the covers, would happily frame them on my walls! And I did like the unique take on witches/wytches, certainly no black robes here. I'll definitely be checking out out the second cycle when it eventually arrives.
