Bestselling author Barbara Kingsolver returns with her first nonfiction narrative that will open your eyes in a hundred new ways to an old truth: You are what you eat."As the U.S. population made an unprecedented mad dash for the Sun Belt, one carload of us paddled against the tide, heading for the Promised Land where water falls from the sky and green stuff grows all around. Review of 'Animal, Vegetable, Miracle' on 'Goodreads'

I wanted to like this good given that it is part of the "Modern Food Is Evil" media genre (see also Ominvore's Dilemma, Food Inc., Fast Food Nation, etc). I eat that stuff up, pardon the pun. I also love memoir in general, and food and gardening memoirs are usually my thing. But other than a few short well-told stories, there isn't much narrative here. It's dull. Even worse, it's terribly smug and self-congratulatory, and by the first third I found myself absolutely hating the author.

The book is most successful when Kingsolver gets off the farm and talks to other people (the trip to Italy) or when she's telling specific stories (turkey sex). But those are just very small bright spots. I was disappointed.
