I wouldn't have found this manga half so interesting if I hadn't read about the fascist subtext in it beforehand. I maybe would have caught it myself while reading the comic as well, as it's not that subtle: a militaristic society with everyone having to be willing to sacrifice themselves for the good of the society, an outside threat only a hierarchic social structure can protect the people from, banned books... It's definitely the most interesting part about volume 1, at least. But I do want to know a little more about the titans as well, so I'm giving volume 2 a chance.
