Review of 'You' on 'Goodreads'

This is a nerdy book for nerds of a certain age. It is very well crafted, lacks something in emotional depth and constantly annoyed me a little, which is perhaps a Grossman trait, as I had the same feeling reading his brother's book [b:The Magicians|6101718|The Magicians (The Magicians, #1)|Lev Grossman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1313772941l/6101718.SY75.jpg|6278977].

It kept me reading, not so much because I cared about what was happening, but because I expected there to eventually be more. It dangled "this will eventually become really interesting" in front of me, but I don't think it ever delivered.

If you care about how computer games and computer game companies work, or if you are dying to know how you can write a novel that describes this in, to me at least, too much detail, this might be a book for you. For me ... I'm going to go out and find out what …

This was an absolute slog, and I would've abandoned it many times, but there was a really interesting core idea I kept hoping would break out, and I was so pleased by Grossman's first book—but alas. This was meandering, navel-gazing drivel.

None

This started to get a bit too abstract toward the end. It's funny, I listened to this on audiobook, and have a WORSE concept of pacing as a result. I really have no idea where it basically stopped being about the main character, and became set almost entirely in the fictional world of the video game. But that's where it kinda started to loose me. Wish I had written this review closer to the time I listened to the book, because I can't remember much else, other than some details about the epic (10-20 hour?) battles the kids had in the original version of the game. (At a camp for software development no less.)

Russell was a nerd in high school but he seems to have left that part of his life behind. That is until he is employed by a games company called Black Arts. This company was the brainchild of two visionary game designers who once were Russell’s closest friends. Reunited with his former nerd crew, Russell soon finds himself in a race to save his job and the Black Arts legacy.

This book rang my nerd bells and I was excited to read this one; Austin Grossman has been working in the video gaming industry since the early 1990’s. A video game designer at Looking Glass Studios, he has contributed in the wiring and design of many games including System Shock, Deus Ex and Tomb Raider: Legend. I still consider myself a nerd, not so much a gamer anymore but I still enjoy playing my X-Box every now and then, so …

I didn't get that it was going to be so dreamy and have so much magical realism - it was confusing in the beginning to have so many shifts of perspective.

As it gathers speed towards the end it gets dreamier and better, very satisfing.
