An unforgettable summer. Rose and her parents have been going to Awago Beach since she was a little girl. It's her summer getaway, her refuge. Her friend Windy is always there, too, like the little sister she never had, completing her summer family. But this summer is different. Rose's mom and dad won't stop fighting, and Rose and Windy have gotten tangled up in a tragedy-in-the-making in the small town of Awago Beach. It's a summer of secrets and heartache, and it's a good thing Rose and Windy have each other. In This One Summer, cousins Mariko Tamaki and Jillian Tamaki, the team behind the award-winning Skim, redefine the teen graphic novel. Gorgeous, heartbreaking, and ultimately hopeful, This One Summer is a vibrant view into girlhood and growing up. - Back cover.

Another banned book. A marvelously evocative story of two friends who see each other during the summers when their families go to the same beach. The storytelling reminded me of being roughly in middle school -- old enough to start catching snatches of conversations among high school kids or among adults, but not always old enough to know what they mean. Beautifully illustrated. This joins the common theme of banned books I've been reading -- they shouldn't be banned!

I'm full of heartache, but good heartache after finishing this book. Tamaki tackles family, relationships, puberty, loss in so many different and eloquent ways. It's easy to find a bit of yourself in almost every character, and relate to the really hard in-between years where you're not a kid but you're not a cool teenager, and trying to understand crushes and really heavy family issues at the same time. Such a beautiful and sad story, I already want to re-read it.

This one gave me so many happy flashbacks. Not the story per se, but the sights, the sounds and the general summer holiday setting. It got so many sounds exactly right and it got me smiling every other page. The story itself was engaging and the tone, rhythm and delivery made it feel realistic and even relatable in mixed bits and pieces from the various characters.
