Aubrey Maturin with Dragons

4 stars

An enjoyable series set in an alternate world with dragons of war. I feel a similarity to Aubrey Maturin, in a good way with the chemistry and settings. The first in the series is decent but the world building really picks up over the series and the enjoyable alternative world is a nice frame for a compelling story

I'm dropping out at 40%. Temeraire, the dragon, just doesn't make up for Captain Will Laurence's stick-in-the-mud personality, a rather dire situation as he is the main character in this book. It's a slog that I started after my wife told me about how great Novik's Uprooted is. I've had this book in my Kindle library since 2011, and never got around to reading past the first few pages.

Well, I've made it fairly well through, and I feel okay dropping this for something a little more engaging.

It's a good reminder that dragons alone don't make a book awesome.
