Something strange is happening at the Orsk furniture superstore in Cleveland, Ohio. Every morning, employees arrive to find broken Kjerring bookshelves, shattered Glans water goblets, and smashed Liripip wardrobes. Sales are down, security cameras reveal nothing, and store managers are panicking.

To unravel the mystery, three employees volunteer to work a nine-hour dusk-till-dawn shift. In the dead of the night, they’ll patrol the empty showroom floor, investigate strange sights and sounds, and encounter horrors that defy the imagination.

A traditional haunted house story in a thoroughly contemporary setting, Horrorstör comes packaged in the form of a glossy mail order catalog, complete with product illustrations, a home delivery order form, and a map of Orsk’s labyrinthine showroom. It’s “a treat for fans of The Evil Dead or Zombieland, complete with affordable solutions for better living.”—Kirkus Reviews.

Horrorstor - A Fun Read

4 stars

A fun read of a horrifying and wild night in Orsk furniture superstore. I enjoyed how the story did not take itself "too seriously" all the time. While the characters have believable stakes and motivations, their actions and reactions are entertaining to anyone who enjoys pulpy fiction.

TL;DR - When your retail job wants you literally dead...

4 stars

I read this book in essentially one sitting. Grady Hendrix seems to have to sucked me all the way in. I love the idea of a haunted retail situation, maybe because I worked in a grocery store for 10 years and it's already so soul sucking that you might as well be haunted by ghosts. Solid body horror, and the start is quite creepy. Also I was a sucker for ending. #FriendshipGoals

Why I picked it up ##

It was available. Needed a nightstand read. It's been on my radar for a couple years now.

## What I liked about it ##

Super short, quick read. Very spooky!

The labyrinthine not-IKEA store layout was so crucial to the story and featured so predominately that it was practically a main character. Made me realize that I would 100% grab an IKEA map and run a tabletop game there.

## What I didn't like about it ##

What's the reading equivalent of covering your eyes during the scary scene of a movie, but peeking between your fingers? I did that a couple times during the gory bits. I'm squeamish!

Literally built on top of a haunted burial site. Ultra cliche, but works for this cheap thrill.

## What I want to remember ##

There was actually quite a bit of clever writing around "job …

If you've ever spent hours stuck in an Ikea, gotten turned around, felt a sense of existential dread as you wander around looking at shelves, couches, kitchens, etc., all of it fake, and finally gotten out after spending more than you were expecting, imagine how much worse it would be if the place were haunted.

I wish I could say I liked this book more, but it just felt flat(packed) after such a good initial buildup. Maybe my feeling about it would be improved if I'd read the hard copy version, since it's actually formatted like an Ikea catalog?
