Memory

Maybe this book rings very true to me as somebody who is airquotes old, but this is really a book about a middle age crisis; about how to handle losing everything, picking up the pieces of yourself, and then going on to the rest of your life all the same.

Miles has largely been unstoppable in previous books, and even death only slowed him down a little bit. But this is the book where he seriously fucks up by making a mistake, doubles down by lying about it, triples down by not come clean about it, and gets kicked out of his ImpSec job. And, his job is also his only connection to the Dendarii mercenaries and his Admiral Naismith identity. He could, of course, go run off to them, but it'd be a treasonous one way trip. So instead he stays home depressed, trying to put his life as …

I enjoyed this one a lot. I feel like this is one of the more character building books in the series, referring and following up on past events, tying together the way Miles has been in the first books and in some of the more adventure ones. Again, in this series as a whole, I keep thinking about how book characters can offer us role models, and this series showcases relationships built on honor and honesty, regardless if they are between blood relatives or potential sweethearts, or people in power. Besides that, it shows a hardworking character. Probably a bit too hardworking, and one up for tougher challenges than I think most people are to boot. I know I have to kind of calm myself that I really don't want to be like Miles even though I find him somewhat admirable.

This book is such a ridiculous improvement over previous books in the series. I don't know if I just find Miles' characterization more palateable when he's an adult, or if Bujold's writing has improved, but I found most of this genuinely enjoyable, even if the twist at the end was a little obvious (which is fine, not everything has to be a total shock, but it felt a bit unearned, whatever). It was an excellent character study of Miles, in a similar vein to how Wrath of Kahn looked into what happens when Kirk is grounded. I just wish, since the point Miles choosing not to get his heart's desire, he didn't ultimately get his heart's desire in the end anyway, but that's a problem with Bujold's writing in general. Her favorites may suffer, but they always get the respect (and domestic paradise) they crave in the end.
