Ils me demandaient si je voyais un nom de lieu. Je distinguais même deux mots dans le jour naissant, en haut du mur, sur le côté étroit du bâtiment qui faisait face au sens de la marche du train : “Auschwitz-Birkenau” – c’est ce que j’ai lu, c’était écrit avec les lettres pointues et sinueuses des Allemands, avec un double trait d’union ondulé. Mais bon, en ce qui me concernait, je fouillais en vain dans mes connaissances géographiques, et les autres n’en savaient finalement pas plus que moi.
Quel talent littéraire ! cette sensation — indicible – que provoque ce contraste entre le récit subjectif de l'arrivée du narrateur, jeune et naïf, à Auschwitz-Birkenau, et la connaissance historique du lecteur, qui, lui, sait où le jeune homme met les pieds.
