The version of the book I have has an introduction by Graham Sleight where he warns the book being controversial. It definitely has controversial content, maybe less on the politics, but more on the normalization of corporal punishment as well as objectifying women. For the politics itself its easy to suspend the disbelief how on this future world we have regressed into such a militaristic environment.

Reminds me of 'Prey'

The book reminds me of Prey by Michael Crichton. The hero goes to an underwater facility, trying to solve what's wrong with the people getting sick, while at the same time unearthing what they in the facility are actually doing and what consequences it has.
Read it in 2 or so days, definitely a page turner.
