The whole story is confusing, full of riddles, and the complexity of the different perspectives of the main characters that are developed is sometimes overwhelming. But these perspectives, which are narrated and developed in parallel, enhance the strangeness of the situation the protagonists are in.
For me, there were too many main characters and too many ideas, which were shown in only touching some. Perhaps fewer ideas and characters, and rather more development, would have been more comfortable. But the confusing is also crucial to this book. So, in my opinion, it’s a good but not that easy read.

Ein berührendes Buch mit fein und doch gradlinig entwickelten Episoden, die von viel Menschlichem erzählen und eindeutig dafür plädieren, sich immer wieder für das Leben zu entscheiden. Die Zeit ist dabei ein unerbittlicher, aber neutraler Protagonist. Ihr Wert, ihre Bedeutung und die ihr innewohnende Dramatik, manchmal auch Grausamkeit, wird deutlich. Die Entwicklungen sind manchmal etwas zu offensichtlich und absehbar, die Regeln der Zeitreisen werden in jeder Episode z.T. mehrfach wiederholt, was etwas lästig ist.
Trotz der Kritikpunkte ein Buch, was mich nachdenklich machte, aber auch gut unterhalten hat.

Ein sehr spannendes Buch über die Welt der Pilze und Flechten. Mir hat es großen Spaß gemacht, es zu lesen. Denn Merlin Sheldrake schreibt mit beeindruckendem Fachwissen, großer Begeisterung und Engagement über das Thema. Dabei romantisiert er nicht, sondern bleibt trotz deutlich lesbarer Leidenschaft sehr wissenschaftlich und faktenbasiert. Bei seinen Recherchen zum Buch beweist Sheldrake große Neugier und Wagemut, er schreckt auch nicht vor etwas ungewöhnlichen Experimenten zurück. Die Ergebnisse sind bemerkenswert, und man erhält interessante Impulse, die Welt neu zu denken.
Der Enthusiasmus, mit dem er den Lesenden das Thema nahebringt, ist ansteckend. Eine kurzweilige Lektüre mit Horizonterweiterung.

Das Buch hatte ich mir anders vorgestellt, bin etwas enttäuscht. Mir sind die Reden zu wenig ungehalten, es fehlt mir an Biss und Kratzbürstigkeit. Das mag zum Teil daran liegen, dass das Buch vierzig Jahre alt ist und ich außerdem latent dauerwütend bin, was das Thema Gleichberechtigung angeht. Christine Brückner hat die Reden außerdem streng historisch verortet verbalisiert. Zur jeweiligen Zeit wären diese Reden sicher explosiver Zündstoff gewesen. Mich bewegen die Texte nicht.
