Scrumbles P. Abernathy reviewed Nefando by Mónica Ojeda
Very tough read
4 stars
Gorgeous prose about the most taboo abhorrent subjects. Seriously, check the trigger warnings on this. But to be safe, assume ALL OF THEM.
It's a character piece that delves into how people can deal with their trauma through art, constructively or self destructively.
It's translated from Spanish but reads very smoothly. I was a big fan of Jawbone, Ojeda's more recent work. Nefando is more amorphous. It's built with interviews, excerpts and monologues.
Overall I liked it but I need a shower and to stare off into the middle distance for a while.
