Fond of sci-fi, but have grudlingly come to realise that I enjoy some fantasy as well. Don't like dystopian, loves deep and thoughtful and the occasional shallow and entertaining book.

finished reading The Martian Contingency by Mary Robinette Kowal (Lady Astronaut, #4)

Mary Robinette Kowal: The Martian Contingency (english language, 2025)

It was engaging and interesting, the plot/characterization balance was good and i found myself anticipating to listen to it (audiobook).

Funny and warm and full of emotional wisdom and depth. It has a feel and compassion also for how people can fail to appreciate all the intersectional issues that arises, even the main character.

Adrian Tchaikovsky: Shroud (2025, Tor)

Interesting, character driven, amazing what Tchaikovsky can dream up about aliens, and having a good pace even if the first chapters were a bit strange. Good to ponder how different alien life would be if we ever encountered it. Good external world building too, even if a bit shallow, but sets the stage very well for the exploration of Shroud and not least the Shrouded. Recommended

T. Kingfisher: A Sorceress Comes to Call (Hardcover, 2024, Tor Publishing Group)

Cordelia knows her mother is . . . unusual. Their house doesn’t have any doors …

Now this was a gem. Strong contender for awards. Hopeful, heartbreaking but not in an dystopian way, instead with warmth and some comic relief sprinkled in. The setting works well, and the characters are engaging and has some depth to them, but still keeps a light touch on characterization. Among the better from T. Kingfisher in my estimation.
