This is a person claiming to teach a system to understand the consequences of your actions, be compassionate for yourself and others, and behave morally.
They really don't want me to read this book, do they. They're not writing like they want me to keep going.
It is one thing to talk about degeneration of moral and spiritual fiber in America today, and another thing to actually do something about it.

So we're just... accepting as given that "degeneration of moral and spiritual fiber" is real and a serious concern?
Peace and happiness! Isn't that what civilization is all about? We build skyscrapers and freeways. We have paid vacations, TV sets; we provided free hospitals and sick leaves, Social Security and welfare benefits. All of that is aimed at providing some measure of peace and happiness. Yes the rate of mental illness climbs steadily, and the crime rates rise faster. The streets are crawling with aggressive and unstable individuals. Stick your arms outside the safety of your own door, and somebody is very likely to steal your watch!

I feel like my stance of "must things in my life will always be normal, and I feel normal about that" is less common than I thought.
