An enjoyable addition to the Luandry Files

4 stars

This book has Alex (from the previous book) as the main POV character and the change is an enjoyable look at the world without the main characters. The actions in the book move the world in dramatic ways, really feels as if it kicks off a new stage in the series and I look forward to reading more

Hilary Mantel: Wolf Hall (Paperback, 2015, Picador) 4 stars

In the ruthless arena of King Henry VIII's court, only one man, Thomas Cromwell, dares …

Tudor Politics

4 stars

An enjoyable look at the Tudor court (during dramatic religious changes by Henry VIII) that is told through Thomas Cromwell. It is political and religious political story with well crafted and worked out characters that, well historical fiction, makes the world feel alive.

Naomi Novik: His Majesty's Dragon (Paperback, 2021, Del Rey) 4 stars

Aubrey Maturin with Dragons

4 stars

An enjoyable series set in an alternate world with dragons of war. I feel a similarity to Aubrey Maturin, in a good way with the chemistry and settings. The first in the series is decent but the world building really picks up over the series and the enjoyable alternative world is a nice frame for a compelling story

Kim Stanley Robinson: The Years of Rice and Salt (2003) 4 stars

An enjoyable alternative history of epic propotions

3 stars

Starting with the black death plague one could expect a normal alternative history but instead we are delivered with something more. The link of characters helps anchor the story and makes the world deeper and I enjoyed thinking about the connections and the altering of what I expected

Kim Stanley Robinson: New York 2140 (2017, Orbit) 4 stars

It is 2140.

The waters rose, submerging New York City.

Bitter sweet story

4 stars

I really enjoyed this story, the treasure hunt in a city brought low but not broken by climate change (and the massive effects of that). The tension between a future where we stay the course that is bleak yet with story of the individual and community still trying to do good providing a bitter sweet book

Peter Robison: Flying Blind (Hardcover, 2021, Doubleday) 4 stars

Perhaps I shouldn't have read before flying

4 stars

There are two types of business books, those that may as well have been written by PR and then those who explore and expose the business. This is one of the later, deeply researched and presented in a page turning writing that filled me with rage knowing what came of all of it

finished reading Wyrd Sisters by Terry Pratchett (Discworld, #6)

Terry Pratchett: Wyrd Sisters (Paperback, 2013, Harper) 4 stars

Wyrd Sisters is Terry Pratchett's sixth Discworld novel, published in 1988. It re-introduces Granny Weatherwax …

While I enjoyed it I would see it is also not my favorite of the witch series of Discworld. If you are looking to start I would have a different recommendation but as I enjoy Discoworld a lot I had a good time reading it

Mary Robinette Kowal: The Calculating Stars (Paperback, 2019, Rebellion Publishing) 4 stars

On a cold spring night in 1952, a huge meteorite fell to Earth and obliterated …

A fun alternative history

No rating

I enjoyed this book, it hit a lot of my sweet spots (alternative history, early space) and I thought it was well written. I also enjoyed the show For All Mankind which had a similar feel in a way. I think if you enjoy what I do it is a should read but I could see it not being for everyone
