A very enjoyable over view and analysis of the late bronze age ending.

WhiskeySailor reviewed The Nightmare Stacks by Charles Stross (The Laundry Files)
An enjoyable addition to the Luandry Files
4 stars
This book has Alex (from the previous book) as the main POV character and the change is an enjoyable look at the world without the main characters. The actions in the book move the world in dramatic ways, really feels as if it kicks off a new stage in the series and I look forward to reading more
WhiskeySailor reviewed Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel
Tudor Politics
4 stars
An enjoyable look at the Tudor court (during dramatic religious changes by Henry VIII) that is told through Thomas Cromwell. It is political and religious political story with well crafted and worked out characters that, well historical fiction, makes the world feel alive.
WhiskeySailor reviewed His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik
Aubrey Maturin with Dragons
4 stars
An enjoyable series set in an alternate world with dragons of war. I feel a similarity to Aubrey Maturin, in a good way with the chemistry and settings. The first in the series is decent but the world building really picks up over the series and the enjoyable alternative world is a nice frame for a compelling story
WhiskeySailor reviewed Post Captain by Patrick O'Brian (Aubrey-Maturin, #2)
An enjoyable alternative history of epic propotions
3 stars
Starting with the black death plague one could expect a normal alternative history but instead we are delivered with something more. The link of characters helps anchor the story and makes the world deeper and I enjoyed thinking about the connections and the altering of what I expected
WhiskeySailor reviewed New York 2140 by Kim Stanley Robinson
Bitter sweet story
4 stars
I really enjoyed this story, the treasure hunt in a city brought low but not broken by climate change (and the massive effects of that). The tension between a future where we stay the course that is bleak yet with story of the individual and community still trying to do good providing a bitter sweet book
WhiskeySailor reviewed Flying Blind by Peter Robison
Perhaps I shouldn't have read before flying

There are two types of business books, those that may as well have been written by PR and then those who explore and expose the business. This is one of the later, deeply researched and presented in a page turning writing that filled me with rage knowing what came of all of it
WhiskeySailor reviewed Gangsters of Capitalism by Jonathan M. Katz
History and travalouge that covers a sadly forgotten history in America
4 stars
I didn't really expect the more personal travelogue aspect but thought the stories, both personal and people meet, actually helps illuminated the imperialism of America and one of it's own coming to term with their own actions and believes.
WhiskeySailor finished reading Wyrd Sisters by Terry Pratchett (Discworld, #6)
While I enjoyed it I would see it is also not my favorite of the witch series of Discworld. If you are looking to start I would have a different recommendation but as I enjoy Discoworld a lot I had a good time reading it
WhiskeySailor reviewed The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal (Lady Astronaut, #1)
A fun alternative history
I enjoyed this book, it hit a lot of my sweet spots (alternative history, early space) and I thought it was well written. I also enjoyed the show For All Mankind which had a similar feel in a way. I think if you enjoy what I do it is a should read but I could see it not being for everyone
WhiskeySailor finished reading Bring the War Home by Kathleen Belew
A good look at the terrifying white power movement growth and danger. I know a decent amount of history and learned even more. Well written and I thought put together a well researched book that focuses on the history.
