Stephen Hayes reviewed Boy by Roald Dahl

Roald Dahl claims that this isn't an autobiography, but if it isn't an autobiography then I don't know what is. Most people's recollections of childhood comes out as a series of disconnected anecdotes, though I suppose to make it a "proper" autobiography he might have needed to give more details, including names, to his siblings, instead of simply referring to "my ancient half-sister"
He gives a fairly vivid picture of what it was like to grow up in the second quarter of the 20th century, between the two world wars. Some things sounded familiar, like schools and teachers, while others did not -- like medical treatment and health care.
