After the tragic sinking of a cargo ship, one solitary lifeboat remains bobbing on the wild, blue Pacific. The only survivors from the wreck are a sixteen-year-old boy named Pi, a hyena, a zebra (with a broken leg), a female orang-utan… and a 450-pound Royal Bengal tiger. The scene is set for one of the most extraordinary works of fiction in recent years.

“I know what you want. You want a story that won’t surprise you. That will confirm what you already know. That won’t make you see higher or further or differently. You want a flat story. An immobile story. You want dry, yeastless factuality.”

Shame I saw Ang Lee’s interpretation of Life of Pi before reading the novel: taking in the story makes a more than average difference if you already know the last chapter. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed the novel by Canadian writer Yann Martel (1963), who has made an impressive effort to empathise with an Indian boy trapped at sea after a shipwreck. From birth, protagonist Pi’s life is incredible. Named after a Parisian swimming pool – Piscine Molitor – the boy grows up in a zoo in Pondicherry, once the French part of India. Due to a series of events in the 1970s, his family decides to emigrate to …

Another "meh" for me. The characters act so unbelievably in the face if so-called terrifying ghosts and a debilitating haunting that it is hard to take anything seriously. I wish the original "suffering" was covered more.

If you’re not particularly religious/spiritual, the first chapter as well as parts of the end can be a horrible slog to get through.
I almost didn’t make it past the first part, it vaguely reminded me of Paulo Coelho‘s “The Alchemist“. Definitely recommend skipping it.

The bulk of the story was quite gripping and enjoyable though, hence the three starts.

This is a charming and harrowing tale of survival at sea. The meta-narrator suggests it is a story which will make you believe in God which turns out to be a less clever framing device than it wants to be but still and interesting one.

This book reminds me so much of [b:The Alchemist|865|The Alchemist|Paulo Coelho|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1287827991s/865.jpg|4835472] in the sense it was very basic and it tries to talk about religion in and philosophical but turns out to be incredibly overrated. I know a lot of people like both book but I never connected with either, I was expecting a lot more from this but I was left hanging. It’s interesting to see books like this that seem to be either well loved or well hated but not much in the middle. This book is just a story about a kid trying every religion out and then get trapped on the boat with some animals, nothing really exciting or interesting happens.
