An orphan’s life is harsh—and often short—in the mysterious island city of Camorr. But young Locke Lamora dodges death and slavery, becoming a thief under the tutelage of a gifted con artist. As leader of the band of light-fingered brothers known as the Gentleman Bastards, Locke is soon infamous, fooling even the underworld’s most feared ruler. But in the shadows lurks someone still more ambitious and deadly. Faced with a bloody coup that threatens to destroy everyone and everything that holds meaning in his mercenary life, Locke vows to beat the enemy at his own brutal game—or die trying.

A moderately dark book with a truly impressive amount of cursing that, despite my not usually liking excessive cursing in books, I really enjoyed. There's very little active magic in most of the book (and the main characters have none), but it does exist.

I've got kids that enjoy stealing. I've got kids that don't think about stealing one way or the
other, and I've got kids that just tolerate stealing because they know they've got nothing else to
do. But nobody--and I mean nobody--has ever been hungry for it like this boy. If he had a bloody
gash across his throat and a physiker was trying to sew it up, Lamora would steal the needle and
thread and die laughing. He...steals too much.

This has been one magnificent introduction of a new fantasy series. It is a bit of a "con game" setin fantasy land. By far the most enjoyable read I've had lately. Pace is just right, there's alwaysthings going on and it does not get overwhelming. Characters are built in jumps that give themenough background without lingering too much in the past. And what characters they are...One thought that came up …

Review of 'Lies of Locke Lamora' on 'Goodreads'

Best rogue / thief fantasy novel I've ever read.

Good:
Novel has excellent structure: the pacing, the information delivery, interweaving timelines
Confidence games are exciting and captivating!
Great world-building: there's a sense of history to the world and it feels lived in
Stakes are high, characters die
Locke punching Dona Vorchenza in the face

Bad:
Sabetha "story-line" felt like a tease

I put off reading Lies of Locke Lamora a long time. One reason was the "Nice bird, asshole" quote that comes up all the damn time. Now that I finally read the book I must say that that quote is over-rated. So damn over-rated. But at least the book is still good. It was indeed very entertaining I liked the characters and the world felt very dense. The interludes were a bit annoying, overall. They did add a lot, but there were also a lot of them. Maybe too many. I guess we'll never know.

If you enjoy fantasy with witty characters, if you enjoy con men stealing from the rich then this book might be for you. I will give the next books in the series a try.

I liked this book, it surely had its exciting moments. Nevertheless, I felt it was too slow to build up the emotion and connection to the story. I struggled to maintain my interest during the first half of the book at least (it felt like years), although it quickly grew during the final chapters. I guess I was expecting too much of it reading all the 5 star reviews? I certainly enjoyed the wit of Locke and his friends during the story, but I just could't get the same sense of anticipation as I have felt with other characters in fantasy novels.

Imagine a group of con men--disguises, fake identities, the works--with a particular set of skills honed over years of discipline, training and research. Now imagine them in a medieval setting. Sound good so far? Part Ocean's 11, part Oliver Twist, Locke Lamora and his band of merry men run complex cons in a fantasy land.

The writing is clever and the worldbuilding is strong. You journey with the gang in both past and present tense, learning about how they came together and the capers they are pulling now. You will get attached to the characters and want them to win. They are likable, to be sure, and who doesn't love an underdog? But the best laid plans don't always work out, and they run into obstacles along the way. You will find yourself pulling for Locke and cursing his enemies. And when you get to the end, you will want …

I've been missing this kind of epic fantasy for a while now. The setting is quite unique considering the genre, characters are pretty well written, exposition on both the characters and the mythos is cleverly delivered throughout the whole narrative and all things considered it's pretty easy to read. Will try to get a couple of other books from my backlog done and then jump into the second book in the series as soon as I can for sure.
