Fried green tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe

This book is really well-written, and the structure employed in it really has the feel of both talking to a grandparent (whether or not they're actually your own) and/or the local town gossip. I love this about this book because it makes it just so easy to read through.

I also love that one of the core elements of the story (one that, if people know about Fried Green Tomatoes, is the most well-known) is just kind of... tossed out there a couple times and in ways that make a person go "Wait, did she just say what I think she said?"

But I do find it incredibly difficult to recommend. Part of it is because I know people can find its use of racist and ableist slurs frustrating and bothersome (which I also can completely understand). While it's understandable that sometimes the perspectives match with the characterisation, there are some moments where it feels a bit off.

Also, there's a lot of Mary Kay propaganda in parts of it, which is very weird considering it's an MLM. And I say that it's propaganda because Evelyn manages to get the Pink Cadillac and other high-level rewards... which is very unlikely. Ninny telling her she'd be good at it is cute in a very naive kind of way, but Evelyn actually succeeding in an MLM is fucking wild. (And Mary Kay reps have used the connection between Fannie Flagg and Mary Kay Ash to post the story about how the former was friends with the latter and gave a speech to an Emerald Seminar in 1992.)

Something else that I'm also genuinely annoyed by is that Evelyn's goal is to... lose weight? And rather than focus on her struggle to appreciate herself despite her body and society's attempt to force her to hate it (something that I think is taught via Ninny), she takes the lessons of her friend and heads to... a fat farm in California? Which is pretty frustrating, even if not a major plot point.

Che succede quando si incontrano una donna alla fine della vita ma che ha goduto appieno del suo tempo e una donna bloccata in una routine che le fa vedere tutto nero? Succede che ci si ritrova a fare un viaggio nostalgico nel passato e a muovere i primi passi in un futuro che sembra la barzelletta di un pessimo comico tanto sembra improbabile.

Pomodori verdi fritti al caffè di Whistle Stop è la storia di un mondo dove volersi bene e supportarsi a vicenda al di là di ogni differenza era normale e di come la trasmissione di quel diverso modo di essere possa far del bene a chi ha smarrito la strada e non sa bene come andare avanti con la sua vita.

Evelyn ha fatto tutto quello che chi ci sarebbe aspettatə da una donna: ha rispettato il manuale alla lettera. Eppure, a quarantotto anni, non si sente affatto soddisfatta come pensava dopo aver seguito tutte le regole del gioco della vita. E quindi? Che si fa adesso? Come si risolve questa situazione improvvisa? Evelyn non ne ha idea, così la sua salute mentale peggiora e il pantano si fa sempre più molle e insidioso.

Finché, nella casa di riposo dove alloggia sua suocera, fa la conoscenza della signora Threadgoode, altra ospite della struttura e decisamente in vena di trovare un orecchio per le sue storie. All’inizio si tratterà di un orecchio piuttosto riluttante – e chi di noi ascolterebbe volentieri una persona sconosciuta che si mette a chiacchierare della sua vita quando speravamo di aver trovato un angolo tranquillo dove nessunə ci avrebbe disturbato? – ma con il procedere dei racconti Evelyn finisce per affezionarsi alla signore Threadgoode e noi con lei, perché le sue storie e la sua dolcezza farebbero venire voglia di passare da Whistle Stop a chiunque tanto è forte l’amore che si snoda attraverso le vicissitudini dei personaggi che ruotano intorno a questo locale.

Nonostante Pomodori verdi fritti al caffè di Whistle Stop non sia parco di tragedie ed eventi terribili, la sensazione che lascia alla fine è di un’enorme serenità e contentezza per aver letto questa storia. Questa piccola storia normale di persone che si curano l’una dell’altra.
