Review of 'Across the Universe' on 'Goodreads'

I came across this book while browsing my local library's site, and it just happened to be available. I went into it knowing nothing about the book at all, and ended up pleasantly surprised.

We open with Amy, a 17-year-old daughter of a scientist and a top military official who are all being cryogenically frozen to be transported to a new planet 300 light years away. Despite her hesitations, she chooses to go with her parents, and they are all placed on Godspeed for launch to the new world. The Earth is dying, and the essential personnel aboard are to help populate and develop life on the new planet.

Elder is next in line to lead the people of Godspeed. Unaware of the cryo people being transported in the bottom levels of the ship, he only becomes aware when someone thaws Amy's pod years before it was time. Amy …

From the very first page of the very first chapter, I was completely hooked on this book! The description of the freezing is so vivid and detailed, and that attention to detail continues throughout the entire book. The world of Godspeed comes alive because, through Amy's and Elder's alternating chapters of narration, we get to see what seems natural to Elder and what seems unnatural to Amy. This alternating pattern works really well because Elder wouldn't realize that some things are not normal because he's grown up with it, and we get explanations and questions about things from Amy's narration.

There are so many things I want to say about the genius of the book, but they all are related to what happens, what's really going on, and I don't want to give anything away! Suffice it to say that this book is crafted …

Review of 'Across the Universe (Across the Universe, #1)' on 'Goodreads'

Full disclosure: I received a review copy of this book as part of the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program.

Across the Universe is a mash-up of scifi, mystery, and young-adult fiction, with a bit of romance thrown in for good measure. In a nutshell, it tells the story of a colony seed-ship on a journey towards a distant planet and the teenage girl who wakes up early – 50 years before the trip is over – only to find herself stuck in a strange, dystopian society where someone may be trying to kill her. All of this sounds fascinating, but the end result is a mystery that is telegraphed far too early and scifi that doesn’t quite stand up to scrutiny.

When the main character, Amy, wakes up from cryogenic sleep – nearly dying in the process – she quickly meets the leader of the society, Eldest, and his protege, Elder, …

Review of 'Across the Universe (Across the Universe, #1)' on 'Storygraph'

Amy and her parents are cryogenically frozen in order to travel to a new planet to colonize it, 300 hundred years in the future. When Amy is accidentally unfrozen 50 years early she finds herself in the midst of a society drastically different than her own and she must figure out why someone is killing off (or trying to at least) the other frozen people. Interesting take on dictatorial government, and how important it is to be able to express one's own free will. I was sort of bummed by where the author left the end of the book, but it was a really intriguing story. Really enjoyed it.
