Picking up from A Discovery of Witches’ cliffhanger ending, Shadow of Night takes Diana and Matthew on a trip through time to Elizabethan London, where they are plunged into a world of spies, magic, and a coterie of Matthew’s old friends, the School of Night. As the search for Ashmole 782 deepens and Diana seeks out a witch to tutor her in magic, the net of Matthew’s past tightens around them, and they embark on a very different—and vastly more dangerous—journey.

Review of 'Shadow of Night' on 'Goodreads'

A series where we went from 5-star to a 1-star. Wow. This novel seemed to me to be almost entirely content free. I nearly made it to page 200 and almost nothing had happened. Zero character development, a still life for a plot, nothing of interest. I guess I'm done with this series, awards or not.

Review of 'Shadow of Night' on 'Goodreads'

Not much of a fan of this one, it's a weak 3 stars at best. I'm game for the world exploration, but continually running into every historically notable person of the era is a bit weak. The vampire Matthew becomes even crazier possessive and everyone shrugs it off, "oh well, you how they are, those vampires" when the behavior would fall firmly into the "manipulative controlling boyfriend" zone in so many cases. Not a lot happens in this book! Diana learns how to behave in the era, they move around between a few cities and hunt for things, and then it's six hundred pages later and it's time to go. I enjoyed the first book a lot more. Not so sure about continuing to the third after this one.

Review of 'Shadow of night' on 'Goodreads'

It's clear Harkness had fun writing this. I enjoyed going back to Elizabethan England as well. I got a little fatigued by Diana who insists on running headlong into danger no matter what anyone else says, but that might have been my fault by reading this and A Discovery of Witches back to back. Going to take a break before reading the last book.

Review of 'Shadow of night' on 'Storygraph'

Just like A Discovery of Witches, Shadows of Night was a book I couldn't put down. The vivid recreation of Elizabethan Europe was entrancing & the past-present volley kept me connected to the story. I can't believe I have to wait soooooo long for the conclusion. But I dearly hope Deborah Harkness eventually creates another series in a world as magical as the All Souls Trilogy. She is a singularly talented author.

Please note, Shadow of Night is the sequel to A Discovery of Witches and therefore this review will contain spoilers for the previous book.

Witch Diana and vampire Matthew are transported back in time to the 16th century where Queen Elizabeth I is on the throne and London is home to the group of intellectuals knows as the School of Night; Christopher Marlowe, George Chapman, Thomas Harriot, Henry Percy, Sir Walter Raleigh and Matthew himself. Diana must quickly adapt to the role as a woman in Elizabethan times whilst surrounded by people she has only ever been able to dream about meeting. But this is not a history lesson, she must find someone to teach her how to harness her powers and locate the manuscript that has caused so much trouble in the present day.
