"Hark! A Vagrant" takes readers on a romp through history and literature--with dignity for few and cookies for all--with comic strips about famous authors, their characters, and political and historical figures, all drawn in Kate Beaton's pared-down, excitable style. This collection features favorite stories as well as new, previously unpublished content. Whether she's writing about Nikola Tesla, Napoleon, or Nancy Drew, Beaton brings a refined sense of the absurd to every situation.

Review of 'Hark! A Vargrant' on 'Goodreads'

I used to follow Keat Beaton's comics on her blog (and still delight in her now-and-then comics on twitter), but I somehow never got around to buying her book when it was released. I finally got around to it, and while I remember reading many of the strips before, there were still many that I had either forgotten, or that were new to me. I love her silly and dim-witted historical characters and how expressive her simple drawings are. My only gripe is that I'm not in the target audience of this book - many of her references are probably easier to get if you've studied American history (or grown up in North America). Thankfully it's still easy to enjoy the strips without always knowing much about their subject matter.
