With a demonic blend of malice and affection, Stephen King says goodbye to the town he put on the map -- Castle Rock, Maine . . . where Polly Chalmers runs You Sew and Sew and Sheriff Alan Pangborn is in charge of keeping the peace. It's a small town, and Stephen King fans might think they know its secrets pretty well; they've been here before.

Leland Gaunt is a stranger -- and he calls his shop Needful Things. Eleven-year-old Brain Rusk is his first customer, and Brian finds just what he wants most in all the world; a '56 Sandy Koufax baseball card. By the end of the week, Mr. Gaunt's business is fairly booming, and why not? At Needful Things, there's something for everyone.

And, of course, there is always a price. For Leland Gaunt, the pleasure of doing business lies chiefly in seeing how much …

Review of 'Needful Things' on 'Storygraph'

I used to like this book, having read it shortly after it came out. But now, after a reread, I was getting impatient very early on. There is no real story (except for a very basic and literal "evil comes to town"), and practically the only thing that happens is that everybody is getting progressively more crazy. 450 of the novel's 600 pages are listless descriptions of people getting mad at each other for petty reasons. This gets old pretty soon, and the endless repetition of certain details to make sure every reader will get them doesn't help build up anticipation.

The plot was good. There were interesting characters and items in the store, such as the foxtail. The feud of the churches was very entertaining, Baptists calling Catholics "nun fuckers" and all that. :D

There some parts of the plot which didn't quite make sense. Why didn't the guy who was dying call 911? Also, I was annoyed by Allen being a cop who made his own rules. For example, he wanted to interrogate an under-aged boy without his mother present so that the mother "wouldn't protect him and disturb the interrogation."

Review of 'Needful Things' on 'Goodreads'

It's not... bad.
It's just in desperate need of being edited to 1/3rd the size.
It's basically 3 sections: Concept, Belaboring the Point, Badly written Conclusion with tacked-on Ridiculous Ending.

I quite liked all the HP Lovecraft callbacks.

It has a moral, though, which I think is: "Don't go to New England".

Review of 'Needful Things' on 'Storygraph'

Loved it, even if it did drag on a little too long. I felt that the build up was a little too contrived, but still just loved it.

I loved every single second of this book - it's busy, fast, rich and powerful. It lurches between funny and hideous and sometimes both with a regularity that had me constantly trying to imagine what could possibly happen next. Outstanding.
