When Tessa Gray crosses the ocean to find her brother in Victorian England, something terrifying is waiting for her in London's Downworld. Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark sisters, who are members of a secret organization called the Pandemonium club, Tessa soon learns that she has the power to transform into another person. The Magister, the shadowy figure who runs the club, will stop at nothing to claim Tessa's power for his own. Friendless and hunted, Tessa takes refuge with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons. She soon finds herself fascinated by--and torn between--two best friends: James and Will. As Tessa is drawn deep into a plot that threatens to destroy the Shadowhunters, she realizes that she may need to choose between saving her brother and helping her new friends save the world...and that love may be the most dangerous magic of all. 4.0 could have been a 5 but to many questions left for the next book.

Why was this on my to read list so long?
was not in the mood for steampunk.... well it's not steam punk.
was tired of victorian london.... Yes it is set there but in a modest way, it is not heavy on class separation.

I am glad I finally got around to reading this. and look forward to book 2

Im so happy to read this again after 4 years, as it turns out I remembered more than I thought ahah and I love these characters and the Shadowhunters World^^

Jem is the bestest boi EVER, Will is being his dark broody poetic self, and Tessa is still a queen

(I also really like Charlotte and in my memories she was older than I thought but no, she has all this burden on her shoulders, take care of the other kids and run the Institute at only 23 poor bby)

A lot of thought went into recreating this Victorian London atmosphere mixed with the Shadowhunters universe and some steampunk, and I recommend it to anyone even slightly interested~~

Took me 4 tries to read this book. The 4th was a success because The Mortal Instruments is over. TMI was like an introduction to the Clockwork saga, and reading this before finishing TMI is not easy to do.

So now, the characters have been established. The world set. Curiosity raging. Reading the rest of this saga should be exciting. Since the characters here hinted a lot of this "past" during the last book of TMI -- and hinted as well of the future after TMI, it makes this time period worth reading.

Though some would say that this saga is stand alone, in my opinion, it is still better to finish TMI. Putting the Clockwork series into perspective is what makes this adventure attractive.
