"1941 – Fifteen-year-old Lina Vilkas is arrested by the Soviet secret police and deported to Siberia with her mother and younger brother. Lina fights for her life, vowing that if she survives she will honor her family, and the thousands like hers, by burying her complete story in a jar on Lithuanian soil. Lina’s writings and drawings chronicle her fight for survival, her difficulty accepting help from a Soviet guard she’s supposed to hate, and her struggle to retain faith in mankind amidst the terror."

This a magnificent historical tale of love, loss, and hope. The suffering so many experienced dragging humanity through the horrors of Stalin and Hitler must neither be diminished nor forgotten.

Lina's story not only exemplifies the dilemmas, strength and hardships required to simply survive but, also, emphasizes the dimension of time required to achieve modicums of success.

As my German forebears noted "Es ist immer eine schwere Jagd" - "It is always a long pull (hunt)"

I listened to the audio of this book, but I think I would have much preferred to experience it through text. For the first third of the book I was somewhat confused and put-off by the overall storytelling and content of this book. I didn't realize that it was a young adult novel and so didn't understand the emotional pallet being applied, nor the choices in the voice …

"Aunque
