Somewhere between 'pretty good' and 'really good'. In a way, its strength (capturing the flavor of classic Arthurian adventuring) is also its weakness (I've never really had an emotional connection to lit of this sort.) Definitely worth a read, though. Ishiguro is impressively versatile!

I think the magnitude of Ishiguro's genius is heightened by the seeming insipidity of his writing at the sentence, paragraph, or even chapter level. I don't have another favorite writer whose work is like this. His books are carefully constructed - the images build on themselves until, at some point, it dawns on the reader that he is holding a lot more in his hands than he thought. We are eventually surrounded by or confronted with a large and moving metaphor that touches our own life. The theme here is also found in some of his other novels; I won't discuss it here. It is better to read this without any preconception.

The Buried Giant is set in a post-Arthurian Britain that is covered in a strange mist…a mist of unknowing. Axl and Beatrice have not seen their son in years; they barely remember him. They expect to run into difficulties, they are old and do not remember much, but nothing can prepare them for what they will discover along the way.

This is the first Kazuo Ishiguro in over a decade and I was very excited to get my hands on this novel. I have heard many people say that The Buried Giant is unlike anything Kazuo Ishiguro has ever done but that is what is brilliant (and annoying) about this author. Never Let Me Go and The Remains of the Day are also unlike anything else Ishiguro has written. He has an amazing ability …
