She's so refreshing! Part of it, I'm sure, is that I agree with her on overall death and body philosophy; my husband knows, for instance, that when I die I would just as soon he (or whoever's in charge) just dig a hole and dump me in. Of course, the other option is body farm where they can study me for deterioration for future forensic studies.
In any event, I enjoyed straightforward attitude and answers. I know it's unreasonable, but I really hadn't realized that fingernails and hair continuing to grow after death is a myth. Of course, I should have, but, even as a scientist, I just don't think strings through all the time. Sigh. Anyway, I appreciate the addressing of (potentially uncomfortable) death rituals and truths to children normally just get blown off by adults. These things are important to EVERYONE, and taking out scare and gory factor …

I was a little nervous about this one. I'd heard about Caitlin Doughty and I'm pretty sure I read a piece or two by her on xoJane way back when (or maybe an interview? Or maybe someone just mentioned her?), so I was intrigued by the book, but, death. It's an uncomfortable topic. However, I found this book fascinating. In this volume, Doughty answers questions from kids (and, let's be real, these are things adults wonder too) about death, bodies, and burial. She is very knowledgeable on the subject, very matter-of-fact, and faces the subject with respectful levity. I thought I knew a lot about what happens in the time between death and burial (there have been . . . a few deaths these last few years), but it was just the tip of the iceberg. Best of all, Doughty helps dispel some myths and fears, making the subject a …

Candid, funny, and fascinating. I appreciate that Doughty treats every question as legitimate, no matter how silly it might seem, and gives serious responses with a levity of tone. I learned things about corpses I never imagined I'd want to know, but I enjoyed every minute of it. Would be suitable for middle school kids and up, I think.
