When you read this book, you will make many assumptions. You will assume you are reading about a jealous wife. You will assume she is obsessed with her replacement - a woman who is about to enter a new marriage with the man she loves. You will assume you know the anatomy of the relationships. Assume nothing. Read between the lies. Twisted and deliciously chilling, The Wife Between Us deftly explores the hidden complexities of marriage and the dangerous truths we ignore in the name of love.

The divorce has just become final, and Richard is already engaged to someone. One woman is determined to change that situation-- no matter what it takes. Soon a tangle of lies binds her life with those of Richard and his new fiancée. A tangle of lies-- that hide some dangerous truths.

Lots to like here for me. This has a serious tone and there are multiple twists and turns. I found myself theorizing about what was happening but I was never 100% sure I had it right, which is the space I like to be in for a thriller. I was legitimately surprised more than once here.

I do feel like there was a bit too much filler. In some ways that extraneous information worked as red herrings for me because I didn’t know what was important or not, but also I didn’t care enough about the characters to want to hear so much about friends and family.

This read clarified for me that domestic thrillers aren’t my favorite, so I think I’ll avoid those in the future. But I think for a (mostly?) domestic thriller, this worked well.

Lots of twists and turns here. I confess I was completely thrown for a loop at the end of part 1.

You get a tale of obsession, jealousy, and messed-up relationships. I can't say much because I want you to go in unspoiled. In fact, don't even read the book description, just go in blind. I though it was good, obviously, so go get yourself a copy and dive in. Then let me know what you thought once you are done.

Beware, though. There are some pretty unlikeable characters here. Not to the extent of Gone Girl, which I hated with the fire of a thousand suns. Those characters were the WOOORSSSTTT and got less than they deserved in the end. The mystery hung together well and I was surprised a few times enough to stop and say, "What???" so well played, book. Well played.

Then.. Vanessa was a young carefree woman, teaching preschool, loving her life, loving her work, loving the man of her dreams. Sure he seemed at times to be a bit of a control freak but what woman in love won't look past a few flaws when she feels like the luckiest woman alive about to marry her soul mate?

Now.. Vanessa is not so young, not so carefree, has lost touch with her friends, works to survive, has lost everything she ever was and spends most of her time stalking her "replacement" Emma, the beautiful young woman who is engaged to marry Vanessa's husband. I can't say much more without giving away the intricately woven twisting turning plot. One thing for certain, I sure didn't see the end coming until it held me by the throat. What really went wrong in Vanessa's marriage? You'll be shocked by the answers.
