Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World's Most Dangerous Man is a tell-all book written by American psychologist Mary L. Trump about her uncle, former U.S. President Donald Trump, and his family. It was published by Simon & Schuster on July 14, 2020. The book provides an insider view of Trump family dynamics and reveals details about financial dealings, including the author's work as the anonymous source who revealed her uncle's suspected tax fraud. The Trump family launched a lawsuit in an attempt to stop its publication but was unsuccessful in delaying the release of the book.

I'll have to read it again; below is my initial review in 2020:

Wow--kinda startling how much one megalomaniac can damage a family without striking a physical blow, and how, when childhood resembles an emotional battle royale, that might make some people just cold, unfeeling, unconscionable, ruthless people.

I found it very startling to read, and sadly, not as surprising as I thought it would be, considering. Granted, folks have been talking about this book for some time, but it does say something about "powerful" families and some of the dirty crap some get through to keep that power, perceived or otherwise. And sadly, how those effects will reverberate through the family's generations if they're unaware.

I needed to grab an audiobook for a walk so I browsed the library's "currently available" list – and ended up with this book. I'm generally not one for explosive tell-alls, so this was a bit of a stretch for me, but it held my attention.

There weren't any really new revelations in this book (we get it, he's a selfish narcissist!) but it confirmed much of what I assumed – that he's a dick, he was raised by a dick, and the family is morally bankrupt.

I found myself wondering how equipped I'd be to write a tell-all book about any of my aunts or uncles. Since I generally only saw them once a year, I'd be limited to stories I heard from my parents and I'd probably need to over-work my few interactions. That's sort of what this feels like. Interesting to see behind the scenes, but it's …

Dr Mary Trump, daughter of Donald's older brother Freddy, disgraced scion of the Trump family, writes a remarkably readable story of her family's history and quirks, and how fortune, abuse, grooming, and enabling created the man who would one day, inexplicably, become president of the United States.

Wish I could honestly say Mary’s book on Donald is revealing.

It does reiterate much of what’s been there austensibly, hidden in plain sight - and it does shine a spotlight on a veritable horrorshow of enablers past and present.

The style’s not that bad, and the author does reveal a good measure of insight, and, importantle, even a laudable empathy for this trainwreck of a man. No such empathy for her grandfather too, who along with a gang of (other) enablers form the central villains.

Thus a veritable litany of cruelty shapes up. It’s not a pretty read, cringeworthy at times.

And it’s entirely unsurprising. One might choose to read it; on might also choose to forego that, and go for beauty instead.

The Donald we meet in this work is the same one we already knew well from the other tell all books and the exceptionally leaky White House. The two I'd reviewed on Goodreads were by [b:Fear: Trump in the White House|41012533|Fear Trump in the White House|Bob Woodward|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1534660010l/41012533.SY75.jpg|63991585] and [b:Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House|36595101|Fire and Fury Inside the Trump White House|Michael Wolff|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1514994130l/36595101.SY75.jpg|58345679]. Both present an incompetent, oblivious man who is obsessed with his own worth and image and not interested in the fate of the nation except for how that might reflect upon him. All the while, those around him scrambled to build him up and try to mitigate the damage from his worst oversteps.

(If you believe there's such a thing as spoilers for non-fiction, you should probably stop reading this review now!)

What this book adds is that he's lived that way …
