Fitz is about to discover the truth about the Fool's prophecy. Having been resurected from his fatal tortures in Regal's dungeons, Fitz has once more foiled the Prince's attempts to be rid of him.

Now, restored to his own body, Fitz begins the painful, slow process of learning to be a man again. He must learn to cast off the wild ways of the wolf and return to the human world: a world beset ever more by the relentless Red Ships Raiders who are now free to plunder any coastal town they please. But more immediately, a world in which Fitz finds he is utterly alone.

Regal has stripped the kingdom of its riches and retired to the inland city of Tradeford. Of Verity, on his quest to find the legendary Elderlings, there has been no word; Molly, Kettricken and the Fool have all vanished. Unless Fitz can find Verity …

This is definitely my least favorite of the first trilogy, but I couldn’t bring myself to give it 3 stars to differentiate it. It’s still so much more enjoyable than others I’ve tried. So it’s a 3.5 rounded up. This one was just TOO long, so much build up, for what feels like a pretty rushed conclusion.

I was surprised by how much was wrapped up at the end of this book given the length of the series. That made it feel even more rushed. But I think the important thing to remember is that this is really more the story of Fitz than it is the story of the Six Duchies. Since he has no active role in the very end of the story, it’s condensed. For me, it’s part of the way Hobb is subverting expectations. Our “hero’s” role is less dramatic than you (or he) might want. …

I finished it, but at what cost ? Haha, no, but I didnt really enjoy the choices made by the author in this book. The lenght was too much, especially when the 1st half, like 400 PAGES, was spent on a hard and lonely trip, all in the POV of one character. Plus, very subjectively, the ending was not to my satisfaction...

But I still read all of it, enjoy the world created and the characters, this last installment just felt disconnected from the other books a bit.
