The Color Purple is a 1982 epistolary novel by American author Alice Walker which won the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award for Fiction.

The novel has been the frequent target of censors and appears on the American Library Association list of the 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 2000–2009 at number seventeenth because of the sometimes explicit content, particularly in terms of violence. In 2003, the book was listed on the BBC's The Big Read poll of the UK's "best-loved novels."

Ergens voel je de urgentie en tragiek door de (sorry, maar ik heb er geen ander woord voor) gare vertaling doorschijnen, maar ik werd er geen moment door gegrepen. Dit is, denk ik, zo’n boek dat uitsluitend in het Engels gelezen dient te worden, want een vertaling – deze vertaling – doet het verhaal dat de auteur wil vertellen gewoon geen recht aan. Het ontnam mij in ieder geval het plezier van het lezen…

I'll note that I haven't seen the movie yet, but I plan to after having read the book. The story was really great, though often sad. One thing that stands out about this book is that the ending is perfect. I won't go into details/spoilers, but most books either end too soon or too late, or they find some other way to leave the reader unsatisfied; but The Color Purple avoids all these defects. I also really enjoyed how plot-driven the book was. Something was always happening, which made the book a very quick read.
