From Publishers Weekly The eighth book of Jordan's bestselling The Wheel of Time saga (A Crown of Swords, etc.) opens with a renewed invasion by the Seanchans, a conquering race whose arsenal includes man-carrying flying reptiles and enslaved female magic-workers as well as powerful soldiers, many of whom have joined the Seanchans out of fear of the Dragon Reborn. The Dragon himself, Rand al'Thor, appears in only a small part of the narrative, but during that time he endures the ugly experience of seeing his magic kill his friends, heightening his fear that his destiny is to slay everyone he cares about. The first third of the book is a little slower paced than is usual for Jordan, emphasizing the growth of relationships, but the action picks up soon enough. More compact than some previous volumes in the saga, this one has the virtues readers have come to expect from …

Maybe it would be a good time to start solving problems instead of piling on new ones

There is not a lot to say this time: everything that has been observed for the earlier books is present here, too. Jordan's schtick of adding new characters and new phenomena in every new book is starting to worry, though. This is the second half of the Saga, and maybe it would be a good time to start solving problems instead of piling on new ones. But apart from that, there is a lot happening, and even if most events have an undefined effect on the whole at best, it still is a lot of fun to read.

Definitely one of the better books in the series

While there's still some slog in this book, it's nowhere near as bad as in some if the earlier books. And to balance things out, there is a lot of good stuff happening, a lot if pieces finally clicking into place.

Just that hugely important scene with Egwene and the hall is driving the plot forward a lot (AND it's really good). Same for some the things happening with Rand, the Asha'Man and the Black Tower, big plot beats.

Good read, all things considered.

As originally posted on my book blog, Reviews of a Self Proclaimed Bibliophile.

One of the first things that came to my attention about The Path of Daggers was that it is a much shorter book than some of the previous novels in the series. While this isn't a big deal normally, the book itself felt much longer while I was reading it. I can't figure out if this is due to pacing issues in the writing itself, or if I am just having difficulty with Jordan's writing style. This isn't to say that I don't like the overall story, because I very much do, but at times I feel as if the story is dragging and then there are times where I feel as if I just experienced a whirlwind of events that I …

He realized that he had learned one thing. Trust was a knife, and the hilt was as sharp as the blade.

I like that Jordan continues to keep consistency with POV chapters. You are able to get involved in the story of where the character is at, progress their tale, introduce a conflict and then move on to the next character. This book felt like a lot of chess pieces were moved in to position, moves were planned, but very little execution occurred.

The follow through that did happen (ie: involvement of Seanchan) was excellent. The inclusion of the Seanchan POV was great because this villainous group of people has a voice now and you can hope to learn their motives as they raid through the countryside.

If there were half star rating this would be a solid 3.5. On par with most of the books in the series, but …

90% of this book was pure and utter garbage. Dozens of bickering women who are so numerous that I can't keep their names straight (and, honestly, I couldn't care less who they are).

There were a couple tolerable battle scenes. And they fixed the weather (something that apparently had to be dragged out for three books). Then some other stuff happened in the last five minutes of this 30hr bowel movement of a book. I guess that's supposed to be a cliffhanger? Whatever.

So, 8 down, 6 to go. And, on top of that, I'll probably even torture myself with the prequel book when it's all said and done. What's wrong with me? I think by the time I get to the end of this series, I'll be listening to it in my car at 3x speed, just to get it over with.

I really like the way this book covers Perrin and Faile coming more in to their own, along with Egwene becoming a little more comfortable in her skin. Elayne's return to Caemlyn was also something I really enjoyed.

It also does a really good job of setting up the plot of the next book.
