Harriet and Wyn have been the perfect couple since they met in college—they go together like salt and pepper, honey and tea, lobster and rolls. Except, now—for reasons they’re still not discussing—they don’t.

They broke up six months ago. And still haven’t told their best friends.

Which is how they find themselves sharing the largest bedroom at the Maine cottage that has been their friend group’s yearly getaway for the last decade. Their annual respite from the world, where for one vibrant, blue week they leave behind their daily lives; have copious amounts of cheese, wine, and seafood; and soak up the salty coastal air with the people who understand them most.

Only this year, Harriet and Wyn are lying through their teeth while trying not to notice how desperately they still want each other. Because the cottage is for sale and this is the last week they’ll all have …

Review of 'Happy Place' on 'Goodreads'

It’s a romance, sure, but it’s a book about (found) family even more. It was a little sad and sweet and still happily ever after. Also Emily Henry writes the most amazing (and frequently funny) descriptions. Here’s a favorite:
“… feeling like a woman in a tampon commercial: overjoyed, gorgeous, and impossibly comfortable – ready for any highly physical activity, including but not limited to bowling with friends or getting a piggyback ride from the unobtrusively handsome guy hired by central casting to play my boyfriend.”

Review of 'Happy Place' on 'Goodreads'

On the plus side, this is a sweet romance that is a nice escape for some readers. I liked romances as a preteen but have not read many since, though theoretically I am not opposed to them. For example, the Outlander was fun. Throw in a little bit of lightly researched history and some sexy scenarios/magic and I am appeased. I also really loved Kushiel's Legacy, which was absolutely fantasist. However, it takes place in another universe and doesn't pretend at anything else. Also, the sex was hot and dark. And I am not against reading about the trials and tribulations of the young and privileged, Sally Rooney is great.
But I hated this book. It was a tedious, ridiculous series of insignificant events. An endless whine. It is redeemed somewhat by its lack of pretension, and there is not an antagonist to be found outside of the characters' collective …
