Lisa Jewell: Then She Was Gone: A Novel (Paperback, 2018, Atria Books) 4 stars

This was a Cousins' Book Club choice. At first, I was not enthusiastic about the book. It appeared at first to be a murder mystery of sorts - but one with little intrigue. The narrative does pick up pace after about a third of the book. I could not put the book down after reaching around two-thirds of it. The story's closure is satisfying and emotionally impactful.

This was the January Cousins Book Club selection. Jaws was one of Becky's favorites, so the selection was fortuitous. I've seen the movie so many times I can recite several sections from memory.

The book carries many elements that were removed from the movie, which turned a social commentary into a monster hunt. That's harsh, I know, and I don't mean to disparage the movie - it is one of my favorites. But while the movie and book share a major plot point and many of the characters, the underlying tension between characters in the book is absent from the movie. Infidelity, small-town pressures, mob pressure - little of that appears in the movie.

I'm no prude, but the restaurant scene between the two characters planning a liaison was 'forced'. A male author writing a scene with heavy sexual innuendo (and explicit references) felt a bit off. I'm a guy, …

So, first of all, this is a brisk read. Dennis combines several interesting concepts to build a fairly, internally consistent 'universe'.

Like much of what is self-published on Kindle Unlimited, the absence of an editor and a writing discipline results in a scattered, wondering storyline with an unstructured plotline. It's probably a disservice to the old school comic book, but these kinds of books most remind me of that genre.

So that's a harsh critique perhaps, but those who are looking for an undemanding escape may find this book worthwhile. I am - but didn't.

A light read. Like others, I had a hard time discerning the difference between the different characters - they all seem alike. Once the plot started focusing on Dahl I gave up on trying to keep them separate and enjoyed it more. The straight line plot is fun. Don't bother with the epilogue. Like any good Star Trek episode - you're better off not trying to read too much in to it or question the details.
