Persuasion is the last novel fully completed by Jane Austen. It was published at the end of 1817, six months after her death. The story concerns Anne Elliot, a young Englishwoman of twenty-seven years, whose family moves to lower their expenses and reduce their debt by renting their home to an Admiral and his wife. The wife's brother, Navy Captain Frederick Wentworth, was engaged to Anne in 1806, but the engagement was broken when Anne was "persuaded" by her friends and family to end their relationship. Anne and Captain Wentworth, both single and unattached, meet again after a seven-year separation, setting the scene for many humorous encounters as well as a second, well-considered chance at love and marriage for Anne in her second "bloom". The novel was well-received in the early 19th century, but its greater fame came later in the century and continued into the 20th and 21st centuries. …

A comedy of manners

Persuasion was chosen as one of three group reads for January by the Proud Readers Of Great Stories group on Goodreads to which I belong. Having never actually read any Jane Austen novels before, I took this as my inspiration to try at least that one, then, when I realised that 2017 is the 200th anniversary year of Austen's death, I decided to challenge myself to read all six of her novels within the year.

I think what surprised me most about Persuasion is the sharpness of Austen's eye and the frequent pretty vicious satire of her pen. I admit, based only on film and TV adaptations of her books, that I was expecting a fluffy Regency romance, but other than the societal expectation that everyone be either married or seeking to become so, the story for me was more satirical humour and a comedy of manners.

Anne Elliot is …

This was my first foray into reading Jane Austen and I absolutely enjoyed it. In some ways, Austen’s Persuasion prefigures the same moral dilemma that more modern authors like Celeste Ng posit in Little Fires Everywhere or Sue Miller in Monogamy. What is the real purpose behind finding a suitable romantic partner? Should it facilitate one’s status, wealth, and position in the world? Or, should it be emotionally satisfying to the parties involved? Can one, or perhaps should one, be willing to sacrifice material possessions, rank, and reputation for love? Of course, this can be a false dichotomy—somewhere out there many have found both money and true love. However, for most people there may be an implicit choice to be made between a) someone for whom you feel undeniable and indescribable compatibility and b) someone for whom you are not truly satisfied with but seems to check the appropriate boxes …

Skip this one if unless you're a fan of Jane Austen. The ending is predictable and details of how we get there aren't as fleshed out as most of her works. However, Mary is one of her funniest characters; she's not enough to redeem the entire book, but she definitely helps.

I think this might make the 9th time I've read this book. I have never really read an annotated Jane Austen before, and I have to say I enjoyed it. Probably because I've read the book so many times that I was less inclined to view the notes as distracting. Still find myself getting stressed out about the ending, even though (and here's a real shocker!) it never changes.
