Always feels good when you luck out and read multiple good books back-to-back. The fifth book of a six-book series I was seriously debating bailing on was not what I was expecting to continue the streak, but a welcome surprise nonetheless!

This is a strange format because it's really a collection of self-contained standalone vignettes that when read in the printed order presents a more cohesive through-line. My understanding is that the author just kept knocking out these shorter snapshots until he had enough of them to slap them together and call it a book. There are recurring characters, but sometimes they're given reintroductions at the beginning of a chapter and previous events are recapped as if you're reading the current chapter in a vacuum. Can't recall ever reading another book in this style.

This franchise has had some serious highs and lows for me. The worldbuilding is …

As an episodic work, it’s a bit more meandering than the others in the series, but also more intriguing in the balance, with more of an opportunity to focus on character. There’s an interlude with Hart Schmidt (an interstellar diplomat) spending some time among family that creates an interesting slice of life. The larger universe has been established so thoroughly that it provides this sort of opportunity for a deeper exploration of certain facets farther from the spaceships and laser battles.

I think this might be my favourite book of the series. It's all about that diplomacy which makes it feel like it's all about finding out how does it turn out and why - does humanity survive in the end or not, does the Colonial Union survive? We still don't know for sure but we are definitely coming closer.

I didn't like the part about the dog. I think because it was the only time things happened because accident, not because the choices of our heroes.

I really like this world/universe. Looking at the reviews from the past I guess people got upset with the release style of these short-stories. As a person who just feasted on them I can say they are a delight.

The stories continue to weave together the state of Old Man's War / After the Coup. I cannot say enough how much I love reading Lieutenant Harry Wilson. His witty banter and situational control makes me smile every time he walks on set. Now that I think about it I think I like him because not only is he the reluctant hero, he's a lot like McGuyver. How can you not smile at that bubblegumpaperclipnanobotbomb. ;)

The familiarity you bond to these characters is easy. Some of their losses might wrench your heart strings. Such is life in a cold universe. Regardless if you like the Scalzi universe of Old Man's …

Reads like an episode of either Babylon 5 or Deep Space Nine. Funny, diplomatic touch and not being about just one person.

the ending however feels abrupt/rushed, although this doesn't change anything when it comes to enjoyability of reading this book.

Good writing as usual from John Scalzi, but I was bored. I gave it to 40% and then gave up. A bit sad to have this disappointing end of the Old Man's War series...

Enjoyed it. Not as good as old mans war, but the characters were good, the format was interesting but still more engaging than normal short stories. I'm glad I waited for the entire package instead of trying to do them week to week.
