Pursuing her dream to be a Harper of Pern, Menolly studies under the Masterharper learning that more is required than a facility with music and a clever way with words. Sequel to Dragonsong.
I guess it is a lot more interesting when you're 12 or something. I found it like a Disney alternative princess story where the protagonist is being so mistreated (again), until someone finally sees their talent and true value and they turn out to be a true genius everyone should be praising. Hmmh.

Okay so I have a new theory about the Pern books, and it's that if you sorted them by the number of times a dude gives a woman "a little shake" from none to TOO MANY, you would have a list of the books in decreasing order of quality.

re-read June 1, 2016 I probably read this 10 years ago. I had read the first Pern trilogy, with a few other Pern books added to it, years before (30 years?) but managed not to even know about these until my SIL pointed them out. I ended up really liking the trilogy and loving the first 2 books. The only complaint I can think of after a re-read is that they end abruptly and you wonder how things are going to work out.
This is the second book in the Harper Hall series and timeline wise happens at the same time as the 2nd Pern book, [b:Dragonquest|127584|Dragonquest (Dragonriders of Pern, #2)|Anne McCaffrey|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1525662811l/127584.SY75.jpg|2000164], and some of those books might be spoiled slightly by reading this before it. This is a true YA/children's fantasy as it stays in the tame read, just a little meanest by jealous students. The last book ends with Menolly eagerly joining the Master Harper to live at the Harper Hall. She seemed very happy at the Weyr but the Harper Hall has been her dream. She thinks it is going to be all paradise with all Harpers treating each other with respect. What she finds is that many of the teachers only see her as a girl and above herself and most of the girls are jealous of her abilities. Her fire lizards only create more of this in most quarters.
This has Menolly growing into herself and becoming more confident at the same time as dealing with some spiteful jealousy from some of the other students. It is great to see Menolly growing into herself and taking up for herself, finally. Her father and mother really did a job on her. The only thing that would make it better is having some resolution in that area but it doesn't happen (might be Dragons of Pern where you see her family and her again?), she has moved on from that life.
I've gone on to the next book [b:Dragondrums|28553|Dragondrums (Harper Hall, #3)|Anne McCaffrey|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1410942131l/28553.SX50.jpg|1592020], but there is very little furthering of Menolly, only how Menolly has grown as a harper after 2 or 3 years in training. The 3rd book is Piemur's book and we only get a little peek into Menolly and her relationship with Sebell and Master Harper Robinton. It is nice but almost doesn't need to be read after this one. To really see her future, you get a glimpse in [b:All the Weyrs of Pern|61926|All the Weyrs of Pern (Pern, #11)|Anne McCaffrey|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1322034004l/61926.SX50.jpg|2341135].

I read this after Dragonsong, but still out of order from the overall correct order to read these books.
I liked this book quite a bit. Other than length, I'm not sure why this book is suggested for an older age group than Dragonsong. I read this book quite fast and am well immersed in Pern at this point.
Clearly, parts of this story reflect things that occur in Dragonflight and Dragonquest, which is why you would want to read those books first, but they just are refered to, so I am enjoying the stories as they are told.
