Story fairly good. Writing annoying. Queer people don't exist in the universe, I guess. Show is better.

In a ruined and toxic landscape, a community exists in a giant silo underground, hundreds of stories deep. In a society full of regulations meant to protect the community, Sheriff Holston, unexpectedly breaks the greatest taboo of all: he asks to go outside. An unlikely candidate is appointed to replace him: Juliette, a mechanic with no training in law, whose special knack is fixing machines. Now Juliette is about to be entrusted with fixing her silo, and she will soon learn just how badly her world is broken ...

I picked this book up as a consequence of seeing the first episode of the Apple TV+ adaptation - and I couldn’t be more pleased. The pacing is perfect, keeping you constantly on your toes wondering what’s coming next, with the reveal of the truths about the existence of the Silo delivered at exactly the right times in the story. The characterisation is strong - and the lead character is one you truly root for.
This story is like a Twilight Zone episode: it's short and has some interesting ideas, but it's shallow and doesn't make very much sense.
It's worth the two bucks and 30 minutes I spent on it, but no more than that.
Well-written, but ... just really, really, really grim.
I started reading this to see if it interested me and kept right on reading to the end. Admittedly, it's a short story, but I've already started reading #2.
