The Power of Myth launched an extraordinary resurgence of interest in Joseph Campbell and his work. A preeminent scholar, writer, and teacher, he has had a profound influence on millions of people. To him, mythology was the "song of the universe, the music of the spheres." With Bill Moyers, one of America's most prominent journalists, as his thoughtful and engaging interviewer, The Power of Myth touches on subjects from modern marriage to virgin births, from Jesus to John Lennon, offering a brilliant combination of intelligence and wit.

I don’t really know what to rate this! The interview format made it hard for me to fully grasp his framework and how his ideas fit together. I want to understand something more before I rate it. “God has no circumference” - what are we talking about??

Both men said a lot of things with confidence, but I wondered how true everything was. There were a lot of claims made that I sometimes needed more information on, like patriarchy “arising” instead of being there from the start. Again, the interview format didn’t help with this.

I listened to the recorded/released series (available as an audiobook) and took a look at the book, which has expanded content. The audiobook is a great listen, as Bill Moyers and Joseph Campbell are excellent in conversation with each other.

I would recommend both, as they complement each other very well.

NOTE: Though, I do not have the standard paperback / non-illustrated version that is shown here. I was lucky enough to find the larger, fully-illustrated book at a used bookstore. If you can find the same one I have, I would highly suggest it as an alternative to the standard paperback.

"The Power of Myth" by Joseph Campbell with Bill Moyers is one of the most amazing books you will ever read or experience. Campbell, the late professor of Comparative Mythology at Sarah Lawrence University, wrote on ideas touching upon every facet of life and his ideas have inspired all types of artistic and creative expression. It would be impossible to write about every idea that Campbell discusses in this book but it suffices to say that his work touches upon many profound aspects of what it means to be alive.

The book is actually the transcript of a famous PBS television special with journalist Bill Moyers and Joseph Campbell where they discuss what is mythology and what role does it have in modern life. It was one of the most highly rated programs of the 1980's and has continued to stimulate discussion. There are eight chapters, each which discuss a …
