I liked this book, it's a little bit more serious and less air-headed than the previous two.
I really enjoy McGuire's InCryptid series.
Alex Price is a cryptozoologist, studying animals most don't believe exist. Things get complicated when people start showing up dead and petrified around the zoo he works at.
McGuire does a really good job portraying characters and the messes they get themselves into. The entire Price family has adapted to laugh in the face of danger, and that brings well needed levity among a murder mystery plot.
Really fun book and series.
Another in the InCryptid series following the Price family of cryptozoologists - unlike the first two, which centered around Verity Price, this novel moves to feature her brother Alex, who works in a zoo and spends his leisure time researching non-intelligent cryptid ecosystems in the swamps of Ohio. In his spare time, he's dating visiting Australian zookeeper Shelby Tanner and working with a variety of reptiles plus a gorgon assistant Dee. When one of the zoo's interns turns up semi turned to stone, and Dee swears it's nothing to do with the local gorgon community, Alex is caught up in trying to find the culprit while continuing to try and act like a normal reptile researcher to Shelby. Things, of course, get more complicated as it starts to look as if the petrifying attacks aren't just a coincidence but are following Alex and Shelby around.

Much of the same as the last couple books, with fewer high heels and snark, but also really not a lot more depth to the story. Alex is kind of annoying, Shelby is kind of annoying, the characters don't entirely seem to react to things logically, and Sarah the cuckoo cousin from the previous novels is a sort of continuing side plot that doesn't really go anywhere or do anything. Eh. Probably won't bother continuing this series, I gave it a try but time to move on I think.
I decided to listen to this on a whim. At the time, I was in the middle of several audiobooks that were good but weren’t quite catching my fancy, so I thought it might be time for a bit of good old-fashioned modern fantasy from one of the best. I read and enjoyed the first two books in this series all the way back in 2013, but never got around to reading more until now. This book was actually a great reintroduction to the series because it switches viewpoint characters to Alex Price, the older brother of Verity Price, who is the protagonist from the first two books. I blew through this book over the course of a week, and then I immediately bought book four and started listening. I may just keep plowing my way through the rest of the series.
Usually I get irritated when the main character changes, but this fit in very well indeed, and with nary a bump.
This book moves the action to Australia. It is nice to see how the author imagines a different ecosystem and what cryptids evolved there.
There was a lot of "Daddy threatens the boyfriend for sleeping with the daughter" trope which I absolutely hate. The characters try to diffuse it but it doesn't work. I could have done without all that.
I did miss the rest of the Price family in this one. Hopefully they come back in the next books.This review was originally posted on Based On A True Story
