Review of 'The House in the Cerulean Sea' on 'Goodreads'

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. If you're looking for some sunshine this is the book for you. Its kind and fun. But also a bit predictable.

A warm-hearted but clueless lib is radicalised into fighting the system and organising a direct action campaign to protect a marginalised community? Sign me up! I heard this book described as Hopepunk and I would say that that descriptor is accurate and I need to find more of it.

A home isn't always the house we live in. It's also the people we choose to surround ourselves with.

I first read this book shortly after it came out, lured in by the blurb by my very favorite author, Seanan McGuire: "This book is very close to perfect." With all due respect to Seanan, I feel this is an understatement. I'm not entirely sure what I expect from a perfect book, but I feel like The House in the Cerulean Sea surpasses those expectations. It was a brilliant read, it moved me so much, and when I saw one of the January readathons I take part in had a "Book that makes you feel at home" prompt, it was an instant re-read plan. I barely ever re-read books. I feel like I could read this one five times a year and never grow tired of it.

It's because of …

This is an adorable chosen family narrative. I found it a little saccharine at times -- there's not really a central conflict, or even much of a point besides coming together as a set of misfits and fighting back against intolerance -- but sometimes you need that in the world. I will say that at times it felt almost like issue-fic: the intolerance was a little on the nose and the solution was very pat (asking people nicely to not bully you; have the mayor on your side and the angry mob dissipating seems a quite simplistic to January of 2021). But it was incredibly cute: a wyvern who collects buttons! An edgy child Anti-Christ who just wants to be loved...and talk about philosophy! A queer, middle-aged romance! And they all become a family.

Really nice story about the effects of discrimination and finding where you truly belong.

Linus Baker is a caseworker for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth, inspecting the orphanages where magical youth are sent to keep people safe from their uncontrolled abilities. He receives a special assignment from "Extremely Upper Management" to check out a secret orphanage on an island.

The story proceeds to examine bias and prejudice and the effects discrimination has on the vulnerable. There's a fantastic found family, a slow building love story, and a lot of funny moments with the kids.

I can't give enough praise for this book, wow. I'm speechless. It's been a long time since I have read such a wholesome, interesting story of positive queer representation. It was whimsical, funny, and enchanting from cover to cover. Easily my favorite book this year.

Review of 'The House in the Cerulean Sea' on 'Goodreads'

My copy arrived early from my local bookstore and despite deciding to check out just the first chapter or two, I ended up finishing the book in just a few days. The House in the Cerulean Sea is kind, genuine, and endearing; it is a lovely little book. The story follows Linus Baker, a caseworker for the Department in Charge of Magical Youths. Linus is unobtrusive, forty-something, a tad overweight, and he takes his job very seriously. He is always professional and always careful to follow the 947-page handbook, RULES AND REGULATIONS, that dictates how a proper DICOMY caseworker should comport oneself. He is selected by Extremely Upper Management—due to his thorough, unemotional reporting and his adherence to the rules—for a special assignment: to investigate and report on an orphanage that is home to some particularly unusual magical youths and their caregiver, Arthur Parnassus. The six magical children at this …
