Content warning Persönliche Meinung auch über spätere Kapitel

Das Buch hat mich sofort gepackt und mit seiner Erzählweise in eine mir fremde Welt mitgenommen. Ich habe etwas gelernt, ohne dass das Buch belehrend rüberkommt.

Das Buch ist über sehr viele Seiten super geschrieben und baut Spannung auf. Es lässt einen gar nicht mehr los. Was mir persönlich nicht so gut gefallen hat, war der actionlastige Teil des Buches, der alles nochmal etwas zuspitzt, etwas vorhersehbar bis absurd anmutet und dem Rest des Buches nicht gerecht wird. Vielleicht hätte ich ein Buch gelesen, dass ausschließlich so wie der letzte Teil ist und vielleicht hätte es mir dann auch gefallen. In diesem Fall ist es wohl die Kombination, die mich etwas enttäuscht hat. Ich möchte kurz zusammenfassen: Ich jammere hier auf ganz hohem Niveau. Das Buch ist gut. Wer einen Science-Fiction Roman erleben möchte, bei der die Science nicht zu kurz kommt, ist hier genau richtig.

Erster Teil ist den Hype wert

Der erste Teil ist so detailliert und fundiert, er könnte gefühlt tatsächlich so passieren. Dazu ist die Handlung spannend und endet in einer genialen Eskalation. Der Erzählstil ist vielleicht etwas kühl, aber das passt auch ganz gut zum Inhalt. Insofern gehört der erste Teil mit zum Besten, was ich bisher gelesen habe. Leider werden die folgenden Teile zunehmend unrealistischer, der schöne Doppelerzählstrang verschwindet, die Charaktere werden flach und viele Dinge erscheinen mehr oder weniger unmotiviert.

It’s a lot of characters to keep up with, but the writing style pulls you in to their lives, the detective story, and the scientific minutiae, making all of it accessible and interesting. Maintains plausibility and earns its length—Schätzing creates a world and you get the feeling you’re inhabiting it and watching details and discovery unfold, rather than keeping track of innumerable details. Its message is interesting, and you discover it as you wind through the story, rather than having it broadcast at you.

Exzellent recherchiertes Buch. Immer wieder habe ich beim Lesen gestutzt und selber recherchiert, ob dieses oder jenes wirklich im Zusammenhang steht. Und immer wieder war ich fasziniert, dass es wirklich so ist.

забув, коли прочитав… десь між 2002 та 2008 — в період, коли не вів читацький щоденник. читав чи то російською, чи то англійською, тепер вже навіть не пригадаю. варте уваги поціновувачів, скажімо, крайтона чи деяких (менш містичних, більш когерентних) речей кінга.

I listened to the audio book (more an audio play, with multiple voice actors) ten years ago and I loved it. I had to listen to the whole thing in one go, which took until the next morning. I know not to try this book again because it will most likely not live up to my memories, so the rating reflects how I remember the (audio) book.
